General Repair Technician (formerly Carpenter) 

General Repair Technicians (GRTs) at On Side rebuild and restore damaged personal property anywhere and anytime a disaster strikes. With the goal of getting things back to a pre-disaster state GRTs use the skills of carpenters, drywallers, painters and magicians! Making clients believe magic has happened is all part of a day for a GRT. 

Responsible for… 

The multi-talented GRT is skilled in the following ways: 

• Repairs to wooden structures of all sorts 
• Practical knowledge of carpentry and building maintenance
• Experience in finish carpentry skills including cutting and installing wood framing, trim, baseboard, cabinets and hardware, casing, doors, frames and sheathing
• Experience in wood and steel stud framing application

• Aluminum framing 
• Secure exterior building materials (roofing and siding) when required
• Set up and take down of poly containment and drop sheets to accommodate work
• Drywalling and finishing 
• Will practice good housekeeping at all times to ensure a safe and non-cluttered worksite
• Ceiling installation, knockdown and texturing 
• Insulation and vapour barrier installation 
• Being awesome, in general! 

• Brush and roller painting (could include walls, ceilings, trim, landscapes and portraiture not included) 
• Installation 

• Assists with demolition and debris disposal
• Hardware installation 
• Assist other team members as required.

• Cabinetry 

What you bring 

The GRT brings a host of abilities to their work, not the least being a ‘get it done!’ attitude. Additional abilities required include: 

• Experience working in construction environments 
• Willing to work evenings, on call and weekends when requested

• Tools and the skills to use them 
• Basic computer and/or tablet/iPad experience
• Frequent lifting from 5-40 lbs, unassisted (from 35-65% of the time)
• Occasional lifting from 41 lbs +, assisted (up to 50% of the time)
• Access and mobility in tight spaces
• Has appropriate carpentry tools (power and hand) and the skills to use them
• Strong people and communication skills 
• Attention to detail, passion for quality and pride in the work you do 
• A safety mindset 
• Valid drivers license 

• Ability to pass a criminal record check 
• Ability to communicate in English 

Other stuff that’ll help you be successful but isn’t mandatory: 

• Skilled trades ticket (Carpenter, Painter, Cabinetmaker)  

• IICRC certification (restoration focus) 
• WHMIS 
• First Aid 

Of Note 

Disasters can strike at any time so a rotating schedule of 24/7 after hours on-call work is a requirement.
